Devon Wildlife Trust
Brief & Challenge
Devon Wildlife Trust needed to show landowners how to create pine marten-friendly habitats, from leaving dead wood and brash for nest sites, to planting edibles for prey and establishing nature-rich travel corridors. The pine marten team were fantastic to work with and had a highly detailed vision of the ecology they wanted to include. My challenge was translating all this crucial information into a double-sided fold-out leaflet without it feeling too cluttered. It had to be eye-catching, informative, and genuinely easy for landowners to digest.

Strategic Design
I began by planning out an ideal, wide-scale landscape, featuring pine forests, agroforestry, orchards, beaver-created wetlands, and thick hedgerows. Because of this sweeping, zoomed-out perspective, crucial small details like pine marten nest boxes or voles hiding in long grass would be impossible to see properly. To solve this, I suggested creating mini spot illustrations to bring those key, smaller elements into the spotlight.
To complement the hand-drawn illustrations, I separated the text into textured, coloured, slightly wonky boxes. This earthy, tactile layout creates a clear path for the reader's eye, resulting in a beautifully guided leaflet that makes complex nature recovery easy to navigate.

On the inside poster (illustration of a large forest glade showing a pine marten in its natural habitat) I developed a custom icon key. This linked features in the drawing directly to the information panels down the side, delivering the education without covering up the artwork.
