Which Graphic Would YOU Stop and Read?

A quick guide to making graphics easier to read.

Take 2 graphics… Which one of these would you ACTUALLY READ?

This a prime example of what could be a really interesting piece, but, as the text is all set together it’s difficult to read. Especially online, as people have got used to scrolling on social media, people have a shorter attention span, meaning information shown in this way doesn’t catch or hold attention.

This graphic contains the same information but it’s condensed down into bitesized chunks. As well as giving space for the text size to be increased, key details have been highlighted. The graphics help your eye move through the information, it’s easier to read and you’re more likely to absorb the information.

Key take aways:

  • Reduce the amount of text (get to the point and cut the waffle)

  • Split text up into bitesized chunks

  • Introduce text hierarchy, pick out key details and add in text formatting (bold/ italics/ underline etc)

  • Think about how layout can help lead your eye through the information

  • Use graphic details and colour to attract the eye

Think about using these tips when creating your next graphic to increase engagement.
